The Tales of the BossLady are journal entries that I wrote several years ago while working as an assistant to a pair of Realtors. As the months wore on, the kookery of the BossLady began to get to me and my patience raveled. I like to think I’ve mellowed with age since then.
Every time I make up a new manila folder for somebody’s property, I put a little, round, colored sticker on the corner. The little, round, colored stickers don’t signify anything important; they’re just there because last year, BossLady decided to color-code the folders by year. All the folders from last year have a little, round, green sticker. All the folders for this year have a little, round, blue sticker.
This little “system” actually sort of made sense back when we filed all the folders alphabetically, but nowadays they are all filed by month so the colored-sticker-indicating-the-year thing is redundant, but hey, whatever. BossLady only likes change when she initiates it herself, and this “put a sticker on each folder” business is minor and doesn’t take any appreciable amount of time to implement, so I haven’t said anything.
Anyway, these little, round, colored stickers are very cheap, and they often have a habit of just falling off, especially if the folders are all piled together and rubbing against each other. Whenever I come across a folder with no sticker, I just assume that the sticker got accidentally rubbed off, and I put another one on.
I came in today (Monday) to find a pile of tasks waiting for me. I was working on a stack of folders and I found one folder that didn’t have a sticker.
However, in the corner where the sticker would usually go, there was a little circle drawn in pen, with the word “blue” written inside. Her handwriting.
Seriously.
Instead of putting another blue sticker on the folder — presumably because she couldn’t find the sticker packet where I keep it “hidden” in plain sight on the side of my “desk” — or just, you know, not doing anything because the stickers are pointless anyway, she drew a little circle on the corner of the folder and wrote “blue” in it.
I took a picture. Check it out. While you’re at it, take note of the attractive rings that were left on my “desk” by someone’s breakfast and/or coffee.
