Tales of the BossLady is a series of journal entries I wrote several years ago when I was working for a pair of Realtors. I present these entries as they were originally written, in the present tense, complete with obnoxious remarks about the cranial capacity of said BossLady. I’m older and mellower now, or so I dare to believe.
Not long after I started working for BossLady, I decided to ask her for advice on a computer matter, since she “almost had a Master’s Degree” and all. I had a loose hard drive that I wanted to put in a box — and by that I mean that I wanted to get a case with a processor, you know, basically a computer to put the drive in. As I understand it, many geeks refer to that rectangular object that holds the drive as “the box.” But maybe I’m wrong, because when I told BossLady that I had an extra hard drive and I was looking for a box to put it in and did she know where I could get one cheap? Because I know she’s great with finding good deals for hardware and stuff on eBay and so forth? She said in reply:
“A box? You mean like a cardboard box to store it in?”
That was the beginning. My moment of dawning realization. That was the moment when I first began to think, “…Master’s Degree?”
Ultimately I figured out, on my own, how to add the hard drive as a slave to my existing computer, and I never again asked BossLady for hardware advice.
You don’t understand how indispensable you are as a shift manager. That’s why we pay you $6.50 an hour to work six days a week with people who hate you. You should be grateful we’re giving you a whole weekend off to spend with them.
(Yes, that was my actual Christmas tree in my living room as of last week, before the fiber optics stopped fiber opting. It is now a lifeless, darkened husk, perched grimly on the corner accent table, stirring faintly in the draft from the nearby window, pondering its former multicolored glory. Merry Christmas and may God bless you all!)
